Self-Drive Minibus Hire UK
Hire a minibus and drive it yourself — from £80 per day. Full guide to licence requirements, insurance, deposit, and what's included. 8 to 17-seat vehicles available across the UK.
Self-drive minibus hire gives you the flexibility of group transport without the cost of a professional driver. Whether you're moving a community group to a day event, driving a family gathering to a venue, organising a staff outing, or running a sports team to an away fixture — hiring the vehicle and driving it yourself keeps costs down and puts you in control of the schedule. This page covers everything you need to know before you book: which driving licence you need, how many seats you can legally carry, age and experience requirements, what the insurance covers, and what's included in our daily hire rate. Read it before you call — it'll save us both time and make sure you arrive at the depot with the right documents.
Licence Requirements for Self-Drive Minibus Hire
The number of seats determines which licence category you need. This is the most important thing to get right before booking.
| Passenger seats | Licence required | Minimum age | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 8 seats | Category B (standard car licence) | 17† | Any full UK car licence. No additional entitlement required. |
| 9 seats | Category B (if acquired before 1 Jan 1997) | 21 | Pre-1997 UK licence often includes D1 not for hire or reward. Check your licence — most holders of pre-1997 licences are eligible. Post-1997 licence holders need to add D1 entitlement. |
| 9 to 16 seats | Category D1 (not for hire or reward) | 21 | D1 entitlement (not for H&R) must appear on your photocard licence. Acquired by passing the D1 theory and practical test. You are not being paid to carry passengers. |
| 17+ seats (paid service) | Category D (full PCV licence) | 24 | Full PCV required for vehicles over 16 seats OR when carrying passengers for payment. Not required for private non-commercial self-drive hire. |
† Licence legal minimum. Hire company policy sets a higher age minimum of 21 with 2+ years' licence holding — see Age & Experience section.
Important: If you passed your UK driving test after 1 January 1997, your licence almost certainly does not include D1 entitlement by default. You will need to pass the D1 test to hire a 9-16 seat vehicle. We strongly recommend checking your licence entitlements at gov.uk/view-driving-licence before booking.

Deposit & Insurance Excess
A refundable security deposit is required at collection — held on your credit or debit card and released within 5–7 working days of return, provided the vehicle is returned undamaged, on time, and with a full tank. Deposit amounts vary by vehicle size:
- 8-seater: £500 deposit, £500 insurance excess
- 12-seater: £750 deposit, £750 insurance excess
- 16-seater: £1,000 deposit, £1,000 insurance excess
The insurance excess is the amount you would pay in the event of an at-fault accident or damage to the vehicle. Our hire insurance is comprehensive cover — meaning in the event of damage, you pay the excess and the insurer covers the rest. Excess Reduction packages are available at the time of booking, which reduce your excess to £150 for a small daily add-on fee. We strongly recommend this for longer hires or if you're unfamiliar with driving larger vehicles.
Damage to glass, tyres, the underside of the vehicle, or the vehicle interior is typically excluded from standard hire insurance. These items are covered by your deposit and may be charged against it. The vehicle will be inspected at collection and return — a written condition report is signed by both parties at handover.
Fuel Policy
All self-drive minibuses are supplied with a full tank of fuel at collection. You must return the vehicle with a full tank. If you return with less than a full tank, we charge the cost of the missing fuel plus a £20 refuelling administration fee. This is non-negotiable — returning a large minibus with an empty tank creates a significant delay for the next hirer and incurs real costs.
Our fleet is diesel unless stated otherwise on your booking confirmation. Do not put petrol in a diesel vehicle — misfuelling is not covered by hire insurance and you will be responsible for all repair and recovery costs, which can exceed £2,500. If you accidentally misfuel, do not start the engine — call our emergency line immediately.
Approximate fuel costs for self-drive hire: an 8-seater covering 200 miles will use approximately 20–22 litres of diesel. A 16-seater covering the same distance will use 28–32 litres. Factor this into your trip budget alongside the daily hire rate.
Age & Experience Requirements
In addition to holding the correct licence category, drivers must meet minimum age and experience requirements:
- 8-seater vehicles: minimum age 21, must have held a full UK or EU driving licence for at least 2 years.
- 9 to 12-seater vehicles: minimum age 21, must hold D1 (not for H&R) entitlement, minimum 2 years' licence holding.
- 16-seater vehicles: minimum age 25, D1 entitlement required, minimum 3 years' licence holding.
Drivers aged 70 and over must provide medical fitness evidence (current driving licence medical declaration) and may be subject to an additional insurance premium. Non-UK licence holders are accepted from EU/EEA countries and most countries with bilateral recognition agreements — please provide your original licence and an IDP (International Driving Permit) if required. Contact us before booking if you hold a non-UK licence.
Only the named driver(s) on the hire agreement may drive the vehicle. A second named driver can be added for an additional fee — useful for long trips where shared driving is intended. Unlisted additional drivers are not covered by hire insurance.
Popular Self-Drive Minibus Scenarios
Here's how people typically use self-drive minibus hire — and the right vehicle for each situation.
Large family events
Family reunions, birthday milestones, or countryside day trips where multiple families want to travel together without the cost of a driver. An 8 or 9-seater on a cat B licence is all most family hires need.
Community & faith groups
Village hall committees, church groups, and charitable organisations frequently hire self-drive for day trips and events. Not-for-profit organisations may be eligible for reduced deposit rates — ask when booking.
Group holidays & road trips
Camping weekends, festival transport, and group holidays where everyone wants to share one vehicle. Self-drive works well when one member of the group is a confident, licenced driver and the group size is 7–14 people.
Sports teams on a budget
Grassroots clubs where the manager or a qualified club member can drive save significantly vs driver hire. Works best for shorter-distance fixtures where the driver is also a club official or staff member.
What Self-Drive Customers Say
"I was nervous about hiring a 12-seater — I'd only ever driven a car. The team walked me through the vehicle at collection, went through every control, and were patient when I asked about the mirrors. Trip to the Peak District and back without a scratch. The excess reduction package was £15 well spent."
Self-Drive Minibus Hire FAQ
Do I need a special licence to hire a minibus?
It depends on the number of seats. For vehicles up to 8 passenger seats, a standard Category B (car) driving licence is sufficient. For 9 to 16-seat vehicles, you need Category D1 (not for hire or reward) entitlement on your licence. If you passed your UK test after 1 January 1997, D1 is not automatically included — you would need to take an additional D1 test. Check your licence at gov.uk/view-driving-licence before booking.
How old do I need to be to hire a self-drive minibus?
For 8-seaters: minimum age 21 with 2 years' licence holding. For 9-12-seaters: minimum age 21 with D1 entitlement and 2 years' holding. For 16-seaters: minimum age 25 with D1 entitlement and 3 years' holding. These are our minimum requirements — insurance premiums may be higher for drivers under 25 on certain vehicle sizes.
How much is the deposit and when do I get it back?
Deposits range from £500 (8-seater) to £1,000 (16-seater) and are held on your credit or debit card at collection. The deposit is fully released within 5–7 working days of return, once the vehicle has been inspected and confirmed undamaged. Deductions are only made for actual damage, late return, or refuelling shortfall — not as a default charge.
What does the insurance cover and what's the excess?
Standard hire insurance is comprehensive cover for collision and third-party liability. The excess (your liability in an at-fault claim) is £500–£1,000 depending on vehicle size. Excess Reduction packages are available at booking and reduce this to £150. The insurance does not cover glass, tyres, underbody damage, or interior damage — these are assessed against your deposit.
Can I add a second driver to the hire?
Yes — a second named driver can be added to your hire agreement for an additional fee (typically £15–25 per day depending on vehicle). The second driver must meet all the same licence, age, and experience requirements as the primary driver, and must be present at collection to sign the agreement. Only named drivers are covered by hire insurance — unlisted additional drivers are not permitted.
