About Our 9-Seater Minibuses
A 9-seater minibus looks deceptively similar to an 8-seater from the outside — same body style, same footprint, often the same model range. But from a UK driving licence perspective, that ninth passenger seat changes everything. Under UK law, any vehicle configured to carry more than 8 passengers (i.e. 9 or more, excluding the driver) falls into the D1 minibus category. A standard category B car licence — no matter how long you've held it — does not cover a 9-seater for hire or reward, and even for private use you'll need D1 entitlement on your licence.
Who already has D1? If you passed your driving test before 1 January 1997, you almost certainly have D1 entitlement coded on your licence automatically — check the codes on the back of your photocard. If you passed after that date and only hold category B, you do not have D1 and cannot legally self-drive a 9-seater. For most groups, the simplest solution is to book with one of our fully licensed PSV drivers, who hold D1 or the full category D licence as standard. Driver-included hire removes all licence uncertainty and is often only marginally more expensive than self-drive once insurance is factored in.
Common 9-seater models in our UK network include the Ford Transit Custom 9-seat, Vauxhall Vivaro Life, Peugeot Traveller, and Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 Shuttle. These vehicles offer a meaningful step up in passenger and luggage capacity over an 8-seater: individual reclining seats, climate-controlled cabin, USB charging points, and a full-width rear luggage area that comfortably handles large suitcases. Average boot volume is around 700–900 litres with all seats occupied — roughly equivalent to 9 carry-on cases plus personal bags.
Every 9-seater in our network is regularly maintained to DVSA roadworthiness standards, carries £5 million public liability insurance as a minimum, and is delivered clean, fuelled, and ready for collection or driven to your door. We can also supply child seat adaptors (ISOFIX-compatible), sat-nav units, and first-aid kits on request. If you need accessibility features such as a wheelchair ramp or swivel seat, mention this when requesting your quote and we'll source an appropriate WAV-adapted vehicle from our specialist sub-fleet.
Groups of 10–12 should consider stepping up to our 12-seater minibus hire for a more comfortable journey with extra luggage room, while groups of 7 or fewer who want to avoid the D1 requirement can opt for our popular 8-seater hire, which remains on a standard car licence.

9-Seater Minibus Hire FAQ
Do I need a D1 licence to drive a 9-seater minibus?
Yes. Any vehicle with 9 or more passenger seats (excluding driver) requires category D1 licence entitlement in the UK. A standard category B car licence is not sufficient. If you passed your test before 1 January 1997 you may already hold D1 automatically — check the codes on your photocard. Otherwise, book driver-included hire.
Can I self-drive a 9-seater if I have a car licence from before 1997?
Likely yes. Drivers who passed their test before 1 January 1997 in the UK were automatically granted D1 entitlement on their licence. Check your licence photocard — look for code 101 or D1 in the entitlement section. If it's listed, you can self-drive a 9-seater for non-commercial private use. Always confirm with the hire company before booking.
How much does 9-seater minibus hire cost?
Self-drive rates start from around £85/day depending on the vehicle, location, and duration. Driver-inclusive hire starts from approximately £280/day. Airport transfers and single-journey pricing is also available — request a quote for exact pricing.
What models are available as 9-seaters?
Common 9-seaters include the Ford Transit Custom 9-seat, Volkswagen Transporter Shuttle, Vauxhall Vivaro Life, and Peugeot Traveller. All feature individual seats with 3-point belts, air conditioning, and a rear luggage compartment.
Is insurance included in the hire price?
Yes, all hire vehicles carry comprehensive insurance and a minimum of £5 million public liability cover. An optional damage waiver (CDW) reducing your excess is available. The hire price always includes third-party insurance as required by UK law.
