About Our Coach Hire Service
Coach hire is a categorically different product from minibus hire, and it's important to understand why before you book. A full-size coach — typically carrying between 30 and 54 passengers — requires a category D (PCV) driving licence, a Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), and is subject to tachograph legislation governing driver hours. In practical terms: there is no self-drive coach hire in the UK. Every coach hire booking includes a fully licensed, CPC-qualified professional driver as a non-negotiable part of the service. This is not a restriction — it's a quality guarantee that ensures your group travels legally and safely regardless of journey length.
UK coach hire spans a wide range of vehicle types to match group size and journey requirement. Midi-coaches (sometimes called "mini-coaches") seat 24–35 passengers and share some footprint with larger minibuses but are built on dedicated coach chassis with panoramic windows, reclining seats, and underfloor luggage holds that dwarf anything a minibus can offer. Standard coaches seat 49–53 passengers and are the familiar vehicles you'll recognise from holiday transfers, school trips, and stadium shuttles. Luxury executive coaches seat 40–50 but prioritise cabin comfort over density — leather seats, fold-down tables, 240v sockets, onboard WiFi, and sometimes an onboard toilet and refreshment galley for longer journeys.
Coach hire excels on long-distance routes where the per-head economics become compelling at scale. Transporting 45 people from London to Edinburgh by coach, for example, costs a fraction of the equivalent rail fares, keeps the group together, and deposits everyone at the destination door-to-door without platform changes or station transfers. Large wedding parties — receptions of 150+ where the majority of guests are local but a cohort is travelling from further afield — frequently use a combination of coaches for the travelling guests and minibuses for close family, achieving seamless logistics at a managed cost.
Festival hire is another core coach use case. The logistical challenge of moving 30–50 friends or colleagues to a multi-day music or arts festival — with camping equipment, food, and supplies — is solved cleanly by a single coach booking. The underfloor hold on a standard coach can accommodate 50 full camping loads with room to spare. Drop-off and collection can be timed precisely to the festival's gate-open and gate-close schedule, with the driver resting in nearby accommodation in between.
For groups between 18 and 29 people, our 17-seater minibus combined with a 16-seater may offer a more flexible two-vehicle solution. For 30 or more, a single coach is almost always cleaner logistically and more cost-effective per head.

Coach Hire FAQ
Can I self-drive a hired coach?
No. Self-drive coach hire does not exist legally in the UK. Coaches require a category D (PCV) driving licence plus a Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). Our driver — who holds all necessary qualifications — is always included in the booking. This is a legal requirement, not an optional extra.
What is a PCV licence and why is it required?
PCV stands for Passenger Carrying Vehicle. A category D PCV licence is required in the UK for any vehicle designed to carry more than 8 passengers when used for hire or reward. It includes theory, hazard perception, and practical tests beyond the standard car licence. Drivers must also hold a Driver CPC qualification, which requires 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years.
How many seats does a coach have?
Coach seating varies by type: midi-coaches seat 24–35 passengers; standard coaches typically seat 49–53; executive coaches seat 40–50 with more generous seat pitch and onboard facilities. We'll match the right coach size to your group — over-spec on capacity is unnecessary cost, under-spec means an uncomfortable journey.
Do coaches have WiFi and toilets?
Executive and luxury coaches typically include onboard WiFi, USB charging at every seat, reclining seats with fold-down tables, and some have onboard toilets and hot drink facilities. Standard coaches include reclining seats, overhead luggage racks, and air conditioning. Specify your requirements when requesting a quote and we'll source the appropriate spec of coach.
How much does coach hire cost in the UK?
Full-size coach hire starts from around £600/day including a professional driver. Executive coach hire is typically £800–£1,200/day depending on vehicle spec and distance. Long-distance and multi-day hires are priced by route and duration — request a quote with your specific dates, route, and group size for an accurate price.
